Harriette Mary Simpson

Observations of a Grandson                                                           As the attached photo demonstrates,of attractive appearance .Born 1885 at Cootamundra, into a stable intelligent family of  good repute.she had an extrovert personality, preferring to be on stage performing  an opera Slightly excentric.     Married at 20 to a stable hardworking
Presbyterian man ,with a secure job as manager of Prestcott Ltd produce merchants.
She cruised on an ocean liner with her teenaged daughter, and spent time in England    .
Partook in an early permanent wave which was unsuccessful, loosing her hair and having to wear a wig.
Lived in a number of superior houses in the eastern suburbs, quite a privileged life.
Over time the marriage dissolved, into an unsuccessful relationship, resulting in both individuals living separate lives'
Hattie lived in a flat in New South Head Road Rose Bay and taking to drink.
Daughter Betty was summoned one morning to get her breakfast,as in her drunken state she need rescuing.Mum and I drove from Double Bay in our Green Ford Anglia,to comply, but I was protected from the sight by being told to stay in the car.
Most time of interaction with Tuss were of embarrassment to me,On one occasion in Guilano's fruit shop in Double Bay she announced this was her grandson as she presented me with a cheque, marked grandson.A third occasion was on my sister's marriage at St Marks Darling Point. I had to walk down the isle with Tuss dressed in a red feathered colored ostrich cape.I felt the whole congregation staring at us.
Tuss ended up living in a retirement home called 52 Mcleay street Kings Cross, with other wealthy old ladies,a damaged soul, alone in her darkened room full of books and clothes.
As a teenager I would prostitute myself,by walking from Double Bay across Rushcutters Bay to Kings Cross for lunch with Tuss on my school holidays.
This is where I learnt to drink coffee.
After lunch Tuss would take me upstairs to her room, where she would relax, drop the pretence and remove her wig !! Shock horror !! Get me out of here.

Contract to purchase the Folly 1910 for 2850 Pounds

Roy Simpson trained as a solicitor,he had an office in Pitt Street, but few clients. His main interest was gardens or Horticulture,he created this garden at Tilwhilly at Rose Bay.He travelled to Japan to study Japanese style gardens.

He used the experience to create a Japanese style garden in the Dell at the Folly which occupied much time energy and thought.

There was little socialising with women, which seemed a pity as he had a brilliant sense of humour.

After gran Simpson died Roy and Sheila downsized, selling the Folly to Ross Butler and moving to

79 Hopetoun Avenue to continue gardening on a smaller scale.A fine Topiary sample below.

After Roy's death,Sheila further downsized to 8 Ian Street to be close to all amenities

The Simpsons did suffer greif with their third child Carnie being gassed in the first world war in France, spending the rest of his life in hospital in Sydney. But never spoken of during the time I knew them.

As children on regular Sunday visits to the Folly,my sister Lindsey and I had fun rolling down the bank adjacent to the verandah, while the adults Sheila,Roy,mum and gran, exchanged news with the tea cups clinking and laughter.

It was a large 2,326 square meter property, with a row of mature Coral trees leading from the solid stone pillers and steel gate at the Olphert entrance to the garden shed.

As a teenager I helped Roy mow the lawn. The small timber garden shed contained Roy's gardening equipment, rakes, shovels.brooms and a push mower. No new fangled motor mowers here. There was an incinerator in a small fenced off area on the east side of the garden, where Roy burnt the garden waste.

The house was large but sparsely furnished,a basic bathroom possably original.Similar kitchen stove and sink but no refrigerator, possably an ice box.The outstanding pieces of furniture were in the study with a large desk and a four meter long glass doored bookshelf that covered one wall. This is where their interests lay.

The fourth child of the Simpson family Sheila Ross Simpson,The care giver with the personal strength to cope with the family's travel through life. She looked after gran till she died then she looked after Roy till he died and finally she dispensed all the family wealth among the remaining relatives .The end of a stoic and very respectable family. No bankruptcy no jail terms no dramas.

OUT of Touch

Sydney now has a population of 5 million people and growing every week.It was possable to buy a house in the suburbs for a 25% deposit and pay it off over a workers life.

But now prices have gone up up and up,where will they stop, recently the most expensive house in Australia went up for sale
You get your very own beach, Seven Shilling Beach, but you have to provide your own boat. But you also get some stables all for $100 million. This may cause envy for Donald Trump. Tis house is in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney its a affluant and pretencious area, very different from the average.

Further west in the suburb of Ryde you are more likely to meet normal average folk who have well designed solid and modern houses that are sold for reasonable prices. Some are inhabited by hard working migrants who are very satisfied with what Australia has delivered for them
