Roy Simpson trained as a solicitor,he had an office in Pitt Street, but few clients. His main interest was gardens or Horticulture,he created this garden at Tilwhilly at Rose Bay.He travelled to Japan to study Japanese style gardens.

He used the experience to create a Japanese style garden in the Dell at the Folly which occupied much time energy and thought.

There was little socialising with women, which seemed a pity as he had a brilliant sense of humour.

After gran Simpson died Roy and Sheila downsized, selling the Folly to Ross Butler and moving to

79 Hopetoun Avenue to continue gardening on a smaller scale.A fine Topiary sample below.

After Roy's death,Sheila further downsized to 8 Ian Street to be close to all amenities

The Simpsons did suffer greif with their third child Carnie being gassed in the first world war in France, spending the rest of his life in hospital in Sydney. But never spoken of during the time I knew them.

As children on regular Sunday visits to the Folly,my sister Lindsey and I had fun rolling down the bank adjacent to the verandah, while the adults Sheila,Roy,mum and gran, exchanged news with the tea cups clinking and laughter.

It was a large 2,326 square meter property, with a row of mature Coral trees leading from the solid stone pillers and steel gate at the Olphert entrance to the garden shed.

As a teenager I helped Roy mow the lawn. The small timber garden shed contained Roy's gardening equipment, rakes, shovels.brooms and a push mower. No new fangled motor mowers here. There was an incinerator in a small fenced off area on the east side of the garden, where Roy burnt the garden waste.

The house was large but sparsely furnished,a basic bathroom possably original.Similar kitchen stove and sink but no refrigerator, possably an ice box.The outstanding pieces of furniture were in the study with a large desk and a four meter long glass doored bookshelf that covered one wall. This is where their interests lay.

The fourth child of the Simpson family Sheila Ross Simpson,The care giver with the personal strength to cope with the family's travel through life. She looked after gran till she died then she looked after Roy till he died and finally she dispensed all the family wealth among the remaining relatives .The end of a stoic and very respectable family. No bankruptcy no jail terms no dramas.
