Born 1843 at Belfast, now known as Port Fairy to a convict father ,educated at the Port Fairy Grammar School he became a solicitor,so was able to take part in the Belfast Special Survey subdivision of James Atkinson.Which saw the 5,120 acres purchased for One pound per acre divided into lots, then further subdivided into allotments leased for up to 30 years and eventually converted to freehold and sold.At his death in 1903 he was a wealthy man owning 1,677 acres of land,39 properties at Port Fairy many leased providing an income and round 1889,experiencing a change of life he invested in a large subdivision in Melbourne's north at Brunswick.
Surrounding the unmade streets of Paterson,Hope and Ford st,where he lived for a number of years.Expanding his female social circle at 14 Ford street Brunswick.
This is where my father Fredrick Powling was born in 1902.
When William Powling died in 1903 the Brunswick subdivision contained 94 blocks of land.
He had a very health income from 29 mortgages returning 331 pounds.
This achievement was quite remarkable for a sole trader operating from his Princes street office.
No 6-8 Princes Street Port Fairy.
He was probably aided by his son Earnest who joined the organisation round 1890.
The following are 13 pages of properties owned by William Powling at his death 1903.
